Know The Truth About Surgical Masks, 'Can We Wear It In Two Ways? Or It Can Only Be Worn One Way?'

Recently a netizen posted on her Facebook wall about a few knowledge on how to properly wear a medical/surgical mask and her words are:
"If the white side is attached to your face, it means that you're trying to protect the environment against you (to filter the micro-organism not to spread them out to others). But if the white part is on the other side and the blue part is attached to your face it means that you're trying to protect yourself against the environment (to protect the micro-organism from the environment not to come contact with you)."
But according to one netizen what the Facebook user shared isn't right at all and there is only one way to wear a surgical mask because the blue side is a waterproof layer to protect against secretions/blood. While the white part is the filter itself. Let's read the netizens full post below.

Read:

Surgical masks are worn ONE way only. The blue side is a waterproof layer to protect against secretions/blood. While the white part is the filter itself.

If you want better levels of personal protection, use a respirator (N95) with a TIGHT SEAL (none of that "mask-then-N95" bullshit). This would force the air to be filtered through the respirator material and not through the sides (like the surgical mask flip this girl is talking about) #publicserviceannouncement

Edit: Erased the name. Sorry baka too late na. Anyway this wasn't intended as a shame post only to correct a potentially dangerous practice.

What is a surgical mask anyway?

Surgical masks are intended to be worn by health professionals during a surgery and during nursing to catch the bacteria shed in liquid droplets and aerosols from the wearer's mouths and nose.

General public

Surgical masks are now popularly worn by the general public in East Asian countries in order to reduce the chance of spreading airborne diseases; in Japan, it is common to wear face masks to avoid infecting others in public settings. It is common to Japan and Taiwan to wear medical masks while ill they do this to show consideration for others and social responsibility.

How surgical masks design

According to Wikipedia "The design of the surgical masks depends on the mode; usually, the masks are 3 ply/3 layers. This 3 ply material is made up of a melt-blown material placed between the non-woven fabric. The melt-blown material acts as the filter that stops microbes from entering or exiting the mask. Most surgical masks feature pleats or folds. Commonly, 3 pleats are used allowing the user to expand the mask so it covers the area from the nose to the chin. There are 3 different ways to secure the masks."

According to Quora, "A surgical mask is correctly worn only one way. The blue side is liquid repellant to keep fluids from leaking through into your nasal cavity. It is worn on the outside. The white side is the filter and filters both what you are inhaling and what you are exhaling. Infection control is designed to protect the patient and the wearer. "

So that answers all of the confusion it is now clear that you can only wear a surgical mask one way.
