Calamansi contains lots of nutrients and it is also one of the commonly used condiment in the Filipino cuisine like pancit or lugaw and for many people, they often use it as sawsawan (dip) with soy sauce. So growing calamansi fruit on your own would be very beneficial for you.

Now here are the steps for growing your own calamansi tree:

The first thing you must know is that calamansi tree grows in warm tropical and subtropical climate. The growing conditions are similar to that of other citrus trees.

Requirements:

On preparing for your calamansi tree you must know first where to place the plant. Look for a place where it could get sunlight. Growing calamansi in full sun is required for healthy growth.

Next is to prepare a dry soil that doesn't retain moisture and remains waterlogged. Calamansi grows well in dry soil.

For watering your calamansi plant you must water it deeply but only when the top layer of soil dries out.

How to plant calamansi:

If you are living in a place where the climate remains warm throughout the year you can plant the calamansi outside but if you are living in a place that is below USDA Zone 9b, it is better to plant it in a container.

How to take care of calamansi:

It is essential to put some fertilizer (liquid fertilizer that is rich in nitrogen and potassium) every other month to your calamansi plant during the growing period.

The calamansi fruit will start to bear it fruits after two-three years of growing calamansi plant and produce them throughout the year intermittently (in tropics). You can harvest calamansi young when the color of the peel looks variegated pale green or wait for it to ripen.

Take note:

Every now and then look for pests that commonly affects other citrus species.
