In psychology, stress is a feeling of strain and pressure. Small amounts of stress may be desired, beneficial, and even healthy. Positive stress helps improve athletic performance. It also plays a factor in motivation, adaptation, and reaction to the environment. Excessive amounts of stress, however, may lead to bodily harm. Stress can increase the risk of strokes, heart attacks, ulcers, dwarfism, and mental illnesses such as depression.

It is best to know what causes your stress and the signs that will tell you its time to do some breathing exercises to lower your stress level and for you to have a relaxing time and think what you have to do on how will you overcome the reason you are stressed.

Here are signs that you are stressed:

Mood Swings

You may experience feelings of resentment towards those people around you in your daily activities because you think that they don't appreciate or see how hard you're working. When you are experiencing continuous stress you may not notice the mood swings. Be careful, this kind of stress can lead to psychological issues and extreme behaviors.


This is a common sign of anxiety. If you’re noticing yourself having to apologize for your short temper and/or you’re feeling emotionally overwhelmed, it may be time to take a look at your stress levels. Try to communicate well to alleviate the anxiety that irritability is. Explain what you need to those around you so that you might avoid irritable criticisms later.


Agitation is another common sign of anxiety and there are many reasons to become agitated throughout the day, however, if you're noticing that you're agitated over small things that didn't seem to bother you before, this must be a sign of overstress.


Depression is a state of low mood and aversion to activity that can affect a person's thoughts, behavior, feelings, and sense of well-being. So if you find yourself not wanting to go out of bed to face the day you might want to take a little vacation or talk to your doctor for advice.

Severe Headaches or Migraines

Stress can trigger both headaches and migraines. Headaches are most likely caused by lack of sleep due to the stress you’re enduring.


Many professionals agree that back pain is directly related to stress. This is a complicated concept in that these researchers and doctors believe that people who do not or cannot deal with their stress and anxiety push them out of their consciousness and awareness and into their unconscious.

Chest Discomfort

Many people that experience anxiety often knows all too well the discomfort and pain that can come with an attack. Chest pain symptoms can range in intensity from slightly uncomfortable to moderate to severe. It can also come in waves. Remember to breathe when/if this happens.


Usually, you’re pretty regular. But lately, you’ve been experiencing loose bowels and more frequent trips to the restroom. This could be a serious indicator of stress. Also, keep in mind that the biochemical changes that occur in times of stress have a significant impact on the functions of your stomach and intestines.

Sleep Pattern

Sleep pattern plays a big role in detecting if you are stressed if you are having trouble in sleeping or waking up more at night or worse having trouble waking up in the morning you might want to check your stress level. It creates a vicious cycle if you’re not careful.
