But little did they know that there are many potential side effects of using baking soda.

Baking soda is popular as a teeth whitener and tons of homemade remedy recipes for certain kind of things. Baking soda provides fast relief but this method isn't right for everyone and the most common cause of baking soda toxicity is overuse. One should avoid using baking soda if you are following a low-sodium diet. 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda contains about one-third of your recommended sodium intake for the day.

* Worsening heart failure
* Muscle weakness and cramps
* Increased stomach acid production

For those who drink too much alcohol also have a greater risk of having a serious complication because the sodium found in baking soda can increase dehydration and worsen other kinds of symptoms.

* Loss of appetite and/or unexplained weight loss
* Breathing difficulties
